The artifact that I chose to reflect goal #3 (Describe the goals, competencies, and big ideas of the revised Social Studies curriculum) is from a lecture we had on July 7th in my EDCI 414 course. In this lecture we were able to use the method of backward design to plan an activity from a chosen grade and content topic.
Why does this artifact reflect my learning of the objective/goal:
During this activity, my group decided to choose the content piece of ‘People, places, and events in the local community, and in the local First Peoples communities‘. Within this content piece, our group chose to focus on the topic of ‘Natural and human-built characteristics of the local physical environment ‘. This artifact reflects my learning for this goal as it helped me to dive into the revised social studies curriculum and evaluate how to incorporate the goals, competencies and big ideas using the backward design method.
What stood out to me in my learning process:
One thing that stood out to me while conducting this backward design method was the configuration of the three steps: Identifying, determining and planning. This design showed a clear and easy to follow process. Further, this made uncovering aspects of the curriculum easier as this was where you start in this process.
How this learning may impact my teaching practice in the future:
The backward design model starts with the end in mind. I think that this is a very important idea to take with you into the classroom in multiple areas of planning. I hope to continue practicing starting with the end in mind both for my own clarity in unit and lesson planning but also to provide my students with that clarity.
